Blogger-candidate slaps himself - twice

Ki Mae Heussner and Chua Sue-Ann Feb 29, 08 7:30pm
Blogger and opposition candidate Jeff Ooi did something he never could have done online. He slapped himself on the cheek. Twice. On the soapbox at a Bukit Bendera ceramah last night, Ooi revealed that he had previously voted for the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.
Stumping for a spirited crowd, the DAP candidate for the Jelutong parliamentary seat in Penang confessed his political transgressions and paid his penance gamely.“Ten years ago (in 1999), I was so stupid! I voted Barisan Nasional - so stupid!” the blogger-cum-politician exclaimed, smacking himself on the cheek. “Cukup-lah!”But he said he did not learn the lesson.“In 2004, we got tired of (ex-premier Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) and we have new Mr Nice Guy, Mr Clean (Abdullah Ahmad Badawi). I voted for him as well. And what have I got? I got VK Lingam… Another hit on my face!” Smack!Ooi, who is DAP candidate, is contesting against Gerakan’s Dr Thor Teong Gee and Independent Badrul Zaman in a three-cornered fight in the March 8 general election.
Evasive KohMeanwhile, outgoing Penang chief minister Dr Koh Tsu Koon today refused to be drawn into a debate with Ooi over the state of Penang's economy.
Ooi yesterday asked Koh to substantiate his claim that Penang's economy was not declining. “I do not want to comment on the rude statement and I would not like to engage in a debate with somebody who is rude,” Koh told a press conference this afternoon. Koh was also quizzed on the allegations made by PKR yesterday that the state government offered contracts amounting to RM1 billion in exchange for a multinational corporation to reinvest RM350 million in the state. The chief minister declined to answer, saying the questions were “vague”. PKR Penang chief Zahrain Mohamed Hashim - who is contesting the Bayan Baru parliamentary seat - made the allegations yesterday, but without producing any evidence or name of the corporation in question.
Koh also remained evasive on his potential successor, in response to DAP's call to reveal the next chief minister. “You think I should dance to the tune of DAP?” he said when questioned by a journalist. “DAP has asked but have the voters been asking? We'll let you know if we think it's necessary to address the issue,” he said.

Indian business group lauds PKR manifesto

RK Anand Mar 1, 08 1:45pm
The Malaysian Indian Business Association (Miba) has given the thumbs up for PKR's election manifesto which features the slogan 'A New Dawn for Malaysia'.
Miba president P Sivakumar commended the opposition party for calling for a review of the New Economic Policy (NEP).
"A rose should be extended to PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim for his bold approach in discarding discriminative policies and ensuring assistance to the poor regardless of race," he said.
Sivakumar said many Malaysians were suffering in silence while some had chosen to voice out their dissatisfaction over the manner in which certain things were being done in this country.
"The PKR manifesto addresses these issues and provides positive solutions for the well-being of all citizens," he told Malaysiakini today.
Sivakumar also reminded Malaysians that the country gained independence in 1957 because of the joint effort of all races.
"The Malays, Chinese and Indians rallied behind the late Tunku Abdul Rahman to liberate the country from colonial rule," he stressed.

Buntong's Indians playing the role of kingmakers

B Mahendran Mar 1, 08 2:20pm
Buntong, in Perak, is the constituency with the most number of Indian voters - standing at about 10,340 voters (or about 46 percent) of the total 21,930 voters - in Malaysia. And the grassroots sentiments among the Indian community this time around makes the election contest in this state seat an interesting one to watch.Feelings on the ground is filled with Hindraf sentiment, with claims of Indian marginalisation is well alive in every corner of Buntong. Dissatisfaction towards the ruling BN and Umno has now been turned into hatred towards the MIC and its chief, S Samy Vellu. Just few weeks ago, a group of youths threw eggs at both MIC Perak chief G Rajoo and Perak Mentri Besar Tajol Rosli Ghazali at a function here. While both the politicians deny being hit, eyewitnesses said at least one egg hit the MIC man.It is this anger that the DAP is trying to turn into its favour to capture this state seat from MCA, and the opposition party’s task is made easier with incumbent Yik Phooi Hong moving onto the Ipoh Barat Parliament seat.DAP’s A Sivasubramaniam will be trying to win the seat at his second attempt on March 8, against the ruling party’s Lee Tung Lai (BN). In 2004, he lost to Yik, known as the ‘Buntong Tiger’ by 2,382-vote majority. On Wednesday night, DAP big guns Lim Kit Siang (incumbent at neighbouring Ipoh Timur parliamentary seat) and Kulasegaran (incumbent at Ipoh Barat) gave a ceramah in Buntong, easily attracting 1,000 people, mostly Indians. Shouts of 'Makkal Sakthi' filled the air and every time the ceramah touched on Indian issues, large sections of the crowd nod, agreeing with the familiarity of such cases.

Misbahul Munir dijulang pemuda India

Johari Jaafar
Fri | Feb 29, 08 | 3:07:46 pm MYT

- mns Cetak

Ten Things You Didn’t Know About Sivarasa Rasiah

Sivarasa Rasiahby Loshini Catherine John, New Sunday Times
October 3, 2005

In the midst of moving to new office premises, getting ready for a seminar at the weekend and preparing for a trip to the United States, social activist Sivarasa Rasiah still manages to squeeze in some time for LOSHINI CATHERINE JOHN.

SIVARASA Rasiah is no stranger to the world of law and politics. The 49-year-old lawyer, a co-founder of Suaram and vice-president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat, together with fellow activists from non-governmental organisations, has long been involved in humanitarian work.

He juggles time between running his law practice and doing what he can to help the less fortunate and those seeking justice. We decided to dig further into his many faceted life.

  1. Though today he may be one of the top lawyers in Kuala Lumpur, Siva’s first degree was actually in genetics. “I was trying to get into medicine after high school in Victoria Institution but didn’t make the grade. Form Five was great but I guess in Form Six, there were many distractions. So instead I went into genetics in University Malaya and graduated with first-class honours. Six months into my master’s I realised that this was not my cup of tea and was already looking at other options,” he recalls.
  2. He applied for a Rhode scholarship to pursue law at Oxford. “I wanted to get out of genetics. I knew with a law degree, I would be quite versatile and so I went for it. Can’t imagine what life would have been like if I hadn’t,” he offers. “Still I’m grateful for my scientific background, which has proved to be very useful in court.”After completing his law degree and the Bar in Britain, Siva took a year off and went to Germany where he spent most of his time in libraries there reading. He worked for a bit after that in London before returning to Malaysia on his 30th birthday.
  3. “When I came back, I was filled with passion and energy. I guess being in the UK had opened my mind to many things. I got very interested in human rights and had been involved with union workers and stuff like that there. It sort of ignited a spark in me and though fundamentally I remained the same person, there were certain aspects of me that had changed,” he says.
  4. His first involvement with an NGO was in 1997 when he got involved with a women’s group called Citizens Against Rape. “That was just the beginning. Later I decided to help out a group of villagers in Bukit Merah who were protesting against a factory in the area that was producing harmful radioactive waste. Later it was with anti-ISA work which eventually led to my first arrest. I spent six days in the lock-up,” he says with a smile. Siva got arrested twice after that during the 1998 Reformasi period but shrugs it off as part and parcel of the job.
  5. With nights in prison, surely his wife must object to his nature of work? “Ann (James, a name in the theatre world) was outside the lock-up all night long,” he recalls fondly. Incidentally, he met his wife at a demonstration as well. “It was during Operasi Lalang and she was there too. We were kind off thrown together and that’s when it all happened. After a long courtship, we finally got married in 1993,” he reveals.
  6. Siva indicates that through it all, his wife’s strength has been monumental. “The nature of the job takes up a lot of my time. Sometimes when she has rehearsals, we hardly spend time together. But I’m blessed for having such a lovely wife whom I can depend on emotionally - with what I do, it’s really needed,” he stresses.
  7. For someone who’s had a brush with the police, ironically both his father and his older brother were members of the force. “I get teased sometimes about this and when I get invited to give talks at police seminars, I always start by telling them how my father was the registrar of the police force and my older brother was a senior police officer. When I was growing up, our house would be filled with my father’s colleagues from the police force during Deepavali functions. Funnily enough, my first arrest happened during Deepavali where I spent the festive season in a cell. My mother was not too pleased!” he says.
  8. This lawyer-cum-politician is a cancer survivor who lost his voice for almost a year. “Can you believe a lawyer and a politician without a voice?” he laughs. “I came back from abroad after the 1999 election and had a mild asthma attack. After several checks, the doctors found that I had thyroid cancer. They managed to remove the cancer but damaged a nerve on my vocal chords. I had to speak with a little boom box and a speaker for a bit. Felt like Michael Jackson. Thankfully, my voice came back. I can’t sing or shout, but at least I still can talk,” explains Siva who, by the way, can strum a tune on the guitar and was a finalist at his school talentime.
  9. When not too busy with law and politics, Siva loves to “chill out” with his wife. “Prior to getting involved with politics, I had more time. I loved going to Pulau Redang just to snorkel or Taman Negara or any beach really. These days I’m a little busier though I try to be a bit more selective as to what I take on. Most times Ann and I just spend time at home watching movies and doing nothing,” he shares. Oh yes, and he does also try to squeeze a massage whenever he can - the one indulgence he loves.
  10. With so much on his plate, his answer to what his favourite moment is comes quick and easy. “Spending quality time with my wife, that’s what I enjoy most!”

Umno may lose up to 10 seats

Premesh Chandran | Feb 28, 08 12:54pm
analysis With 95 parliament seats and 269 state seats in Peninsula Malaysia, Umno is by far the most dominant political party in the country.

In 2004, Umno won 95 out of the 103 (92.2%) parliament seats and 268 out of 304 (88.2%) state seats contested in the peninsular. Umno had a near perfect record in all states except in the Malay heartland of Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah where it lost 32 state seats and seven parliament seats to PAS.

Its biggest prize in 2004 was snatching Terengganu back from PAS, a state it had lost in 1999 in the wake of the reformasi movement. However, this victory was marred by serious allegations of electoral fraud.

terengganu popular votes 1999 to 2004For example, the opposition lost a mere 5.2% of its total vote haul in the state - from 180,492 votes (1999) to 171,136 votes (2004). On the other hand, Umno secured votes totaling 222,084 - a mammoth jump of 72% as compared to the 128,912 votes it got in 1999.

In total, there were an additional 83,816 votes cast in 2004, a growth of 27% from 1999. For Umno to achieve its astounding feat in almost doubling its popular votes in Terengganu, all these additional and new votes would have gone to the party.

These figures plus the fact that a couple of constituencies had unprecedented turnouts of above 90% have casts serious doubts on the credibility of the electoral process.

kelantan seats 2004 election results breakdown of seatsIn this general election, Umno has set its sights on capturing Kelantan, a state ruled by PAS since 1990.

There is fear among PAS that Kelantan would face similar 90-plus-percent turnouts. If that is the case, Umno would have achieved its 18-year ambition to wrest the state from the clutches of the Islamic party.

But if all things remain equal and with a 5% swing of voters towards the BN, Umno stands to capture up to 14 state seats and four parliament seats. However, if these voters swing towards the opposition, Umno will lose 10 state seats and six parliament seats.

A swing among Malay voters?

In Terengganu, a 5% swing among Malay voters will see PAS pick up two marginal parliament seats - Kuala Terengganu and Marang, as well as 10 state seats - just a couple of seats from winning back the state. A similar swing in Kedah will see the opposition pick up four parliament and six state seats.

Voter swing is the proportion of those who had voted for a particular party in the last election changing their votes this time.

In other states, Umno will also be watching closely the swing among non-Malays as some of its seats have sizable percentage of such voters.

A 10% swing among non-Malay voters and a 5% swing among Malays, will see Umno losing Parit Buntar in Perak (majority 4,698), Bera, Pahang (majority 4.470), Nibong Tebal, Penang (majority 6,005) and Pokok Sena in Kedah. (majority 7,300).

Umno may also lose seats with a heavy Indian voting base if the swing among Indian voters is larger than expected.

These include Bagan Serai (majority 5,614, Indian voters: 10.4%) and Bagan Datok (majority 12,539, Indian voters: 22.6%) in Perak, Tanjong Karang (majority 9,008: Indian voters: 11.1%), Kuala Selangor (majority 13,662, Indian voters: 23.3%) in Selangor, and Lembah Pantai in Kuala Lumpur (majority 15,288, Indian voters: 18.2%).

After benefitting from a sizable swing among Malay voters to the government in 2004, Umno's electoral fortunes in the upcoming election will heavily depend on these voters sticking with BN.

However, after four years of ineffectual leadership by Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, we expect a slight swing against the government among Malay voters in 2008, which could result in Umno losing some seven parliament seats, and perhaps as many as 10 seats.
